About Henderson County
Henderson County is in west-central Illinois on the Mississippi River along the Great River Road. It covers 1,859 square miles and has a population of over 7,300. Its county seat and largest city is Oquawka (from Oquawkiek, a Sac/Fox native American tribe word for Lower Yellow Banks for the sand along the shore of the Mississippi). The county was founded in 1841 and named after Henderson County, Kentucky, which was named for Richard Henderson, an American pioneer, merchant, and jurist who died in 1785. Nearby is Mississippi River Lock and Dam #18, which opened in 1937.
